Classroom Policies and Procedures
Chemistry, Honors, and AP Chemistry
This science course meets the University of California entrance requirements for a laboratory science and is aligned to the State of California’s Science Content Standards for Chemistry. The principles, theories, and laws of chemistry are introduced, discussed, and hopefully learned using lectures, demonstrations, and experiments. This class will cover the following major units: Measurement including density; Atomic Structure; Nomenclature; Stoichiometry; Chemical Bonds; States of Matter; Chemical Reactions; Gas Laws; Energy including kinetics; and Acids, Bases and Solutions.

Grades are determined using points assigned to each assignment, quiz, test, etc.
Make-up tests and test retakes start at 7 AM if you are not here in a seat and ready to take a test by 7:05 AM then you will not be allowed to take the test that morning. Tests cannot be made up during snack or lunch. I will stay longer than 4:30 PM on a particular day only if previously arranged. Why only mornings…I coach volleyball. On non-match days practice usually ends at approximately 4:30 PM, if you make arrangements, I’ll stay later.
The 67% Percent Rule
First, how is the rule applied.
A student with an 8 of 10 (80%) on a hw gets a 20 of 40 (50 %) on the test which covers this hw. The student's hw grade is reduced to 50% (or their percentage below 67%). If the student scores 67% or higher, then the student will retain their original homework score. A 67% on the test will support 100% of any grade on an assignment covered by the test.
Nor is the 67% rule threatening to a student who does not understand the subject. It does inform the student that his/her level of understanding will support only such a grade... but the student may get lots of extra help and may retake any test twice during pre-arranged times.
The 100% Rule
No student may score higher on any assignment than 100% of the test grade covering that assignment
Late Work
if the student has received an "L" on the assignment
First, how is the rule applied?
A student who submits a 10 point worksheet after the worksheets of other students have been collected or graded may get full credit for the assignment. The grade is then recorded as a 10 L. If the student gets a grade of 16 out of 20 (80%) on the test which covers that assignment, the 10 L is worth 8 points. The student may retake the test in order to raise the grade on both assignments.
The one week rule
The final date for a make-up or repeat test is 1 week after the date of the originally scheduled test (Friday). I found that a few too many students delayed taking the tests and fell so far behind that they wound up in serious difficulty but didn't quite realize it. Therefore only 1 week and you can NOT take more than one test in a day. And of course this rule doesn’t apply the last two weeks of any semester.
Preparedness for Class
Students need to be seated in their seat BEFORE the bell rings. Students need to have paper, pencil or pen, scientific calculator (TI 30 or Casio fx260 under $10) and any reading or other homework assignment completed. There is a $15 lab fee assessed to every student for chemistry. Please pay at the ASB/Finance window applying it to Mr. Lord and the course in which you are enrolled. You have approximately 2 weeks to do this.
Classroom Behavior
Stay on task the entire class period. No horseplay (especially in lab) will be tolerated.
Keep your surroundings clean (this also means your glassware).
No gum, food, or drinks on lab activity days. No open toed shoes on lab days.
Goggles will be correctly worn on lab days.
No profanity, rudeness (to teacher or fellow classmates), or obscene behavior.
Maturity is expected at all times and highly appreciated.
LET’S HAVE A GREAT SCHOOL YEAR!!!!
