Welcome to Coach Latham's physical education class! I am looking forward to an exciting semester with you here at Warren High School. The goal in physical education is to provide you with the skills and knowledge that will enable you to become a lifelong physically active person. I will provide you with a variety of activities to get you moving and I hope that you have fun in the process.
The following guidelines have been written in order to help you succeed and enjoy this class. READ them carefully and discuss them with your parents or guardian(s). I look forward to helping you achieve your goals.
- Treat every student with respect
- Ensure a safe environment for all students
- Develop a comprehensive physical education program by providing a wide variety of physical activities
- Let each student know where he/she stands in terms of their physical education grade
- Increase and improve each students knowledge of physical education
- To be a physically fit role model
- To be enthusiastic about being in class
- To treat teachers and other students with respect. Swearing and taunting other students is unacceptable.
- To be on time to class everyday. Students must be dressed in the Warren High School Physical Education T-shirt and shorts and white socks only. Students must sit at assigned numbers upon leaving the locker-room.
- To be prepared for activity. This includes proper dress for class as stated in the above bullet.
- When the teacher is speaking, you, the student need to be listening. Making noise or being disruptive when the teacher is instructing is unacceptable.
- To promote a safe environment in physical education. Horseplay is strictly prohibited.
- Always work to 100% of your ability.
- To inform teachers of potential problems your child may have during physical education class. Inform teachers of changes in medication that might have an impact on how the react to exercise.
- To express concerns immediately. If you have questions or a problem with the program, please call before a problem has a chance to escalate.
- To encourage your son or daughter to exhibit a healthy lifestyle outside of school. Research indicates when both parents are physically active, 95% of children will be active.
- To help students recognize the value of physical activity.
- It is essential that you arrive at each and every class on time. Students are given (5) minutes to change and get out to their role numbers.
- CONSEQUENCES for being TARDY
- 1st OFFENSE: Warning
- 2nd OFFENSE: Tardy Sweep
- 3rd OFFENSE: Loss of Points, Call Home, Tardy Sweep
- 4th OFFENSE: Referral / Saturday School
- Class CUTS or TRUANCY is UNACCEPTABLE and subject to SUSPENSION. To be excused from class, students must present a pass signed by another teacher or administrator.
- If you are unable to participate, you must be excused by a doctor or parent (1 - day).
- To be excused from class, your must do one of the following:
- Supply your teacher with a signed parent note that specifically states to condition and what you are ABLE to do. (i.e.: if you have injured your ankle and are unable to run, walking is okay). PARENT NOTES ARE GOOD FOR (1) DAY ONLY. BEYOND THAT, A DOCTORS EXCUSE IS REQUIRED.
- Supply your teacher with a signed parent note that specifically states the condition, what the student is ABLE to do, and when the student is able to return to class, or when he/she will be re-evaluated by the physician.
- Call and leave a message on Coach Latham's voicemail. (562)-869-7306 Extension: 5635 that explains the situation.

- Having a student report the condition verbally to a teacher is unacceptable and will result in the student performing at the best of their abilities.
- Students will be required to make up any missed assignments.
- Excusing your son/daughter from participating in any running activity or fitness test, would be similar to excusing them from taking a MATH TEST.
Dress
- Proper Warren Bears physical education T-shirt, shorts white socks and appropriate tennis shoes are REQUIRED for participation in this physical education class.
- Students are NOT ALLOWED to wear JEWELRY in class. This requirement has to do with SAFETY. This includes, but is not limited to watches, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, etc. Post or stud earrings may remain in during class.
- All medical type bracelets and necklaces are allowed, but should be secured.
- Classes will be held outside as long as temperature is above 50 degrees; therefore, students should have proper sweat suit attire. All blue, gray or white and PLAIN, with NO writing, NO hoods and No zippers Warren logos are acceptable.
Locks and Lockers
- What goes into your small physical education locker? Warren Bears physical education shirt, shorts, white socks and tennis shoes. Optional: sweat suit, deodorant (non-aerosol spray), and cologne or perfume (plastic bottles only).
- Students are required to purchase a school approved Master Lock with a school approved control on the back of the lock. Should you lose or misplace your lock, you have (2) days to replace it and report it to the locker room attendant. Students are responsible for their own personal items. The physical education staff is NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS.
- STUDENTS MUST SECURE ALL BELONGINGS BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER CLASS.
- It is recommended that you do not reveal your lock combination to anyone. There are dishonest people out there who are looking to the opportunity to take advantage of your unfortunate situation.
- If at any time a student is missing their lock, he / she need to notify their teacher or the locker room attendant so your lock can be recovered.
Showers & Hygiene
- Students are not required to shower, but are encouraged to exhibit personal hygiene skills.
- Remember, no likes to sit next to someone who doesn't smell pleasant.
- Students must bring their own towel and soap. The school will provide the water.
Asthma & Allergies
- All students with Asthma and / or allergies are required to have their parents and physician complete an Asthma Care Plan Form.
- Students with Asthma are encouraged to keep an inhaler / medication with their physical education teacher or with the school nurse.
Assessment
- Students are assessed in physical education by using authentic, alternative performance or traditional based assessments. They may take any or all of the following forms:
- Homework / Class work 10%
- Written Assessment 15%
- Rubric guided Physical Skills Assessment 15%
- Fitness Skills Assessment 15%
- Daily Activity Assessment 15%
- Social Skills / Awareness 10%
- Class Management Assessment 10%
- Semester Project 10%
- Homework / Class work is any assignment given during class or set as an outside of class assignment.
- Written Assignment may be given during the course of each 4 week unit of instruction
- Fitness Skills Assessment is based on points provided for accomplishing the various components of the fitness tests.
- Daily Activity Assessments are given at the end of each quarter. Points may be 1 - 5 in value. (5) Being the highest value. Absences result in the established value being deducted. This grade is strictly based on the student's daily activity. Behavior does not factor into this part of the grade.
- Social Skills and Awareness is the student's positive and negative behavior. This portion of your grade depends on how you treat others and your acceptance of differences.
- Class Management Points are given at the end of each quarter. Points are based on the following Class Managements components:
- Non-Suits
- Gum Chewing
- Behavior
- Locker room responsibilities
- Jewelry
- Class supplies
- Semester Project is the final semester project that will emphasize the New Physical Education curriculum.
- Exercise Leadership
- Videotape of an outside game
- Teach a multi-cultural game or dance.
